Who We Are

Our dear friend and colleague, D.C. Mangum, who passed away on April 6, 2015 served as a champion for diversity and inclusion at Mayo Clinic and in the Rochester community. He was Program Director for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, where he was dedicated to the support and rapid growth of Mayo Employee Resource Groups. D.C. previously served as Program Director for the Administrative Fellows Program and Director of the Employee Service Center.

In an effort to support Rochester’s children and honor D. C. Mangum’s legacy of community service and support for youth, an annual literacy festival is being planned to spread the word about the important role that summer learning plays in ensuring that all children advance, rather than regress academically during the summer.

What We Do

Rochester’s 5th annual D.C. Mangum Literacy Festival + Ice Cream for Books will be held on Thursday, April 11 at Riverside Elementary School from 6:00pm until 7:30pm.

Working in concert with community organizations, we are planning an event that is designed to target Rochester’s elementary children and help combat  the potential two month “learning loss” that can occur for many children during the summer months when they are out of school. Evidence indicates that this summer learning loss accounts for about two-thirds of the ninth grade achievement gap in reading.
