Who We Are
During one of life's most unknown journeys, coping with the physical, financial and emotional hardships that transplantation cause can bring incredible challenges. Yet in their home away from home, patients and caregivers at Gift of Life develop supportive friendships that help them face these challenges with courage. It is our hope that together we can make a difference in sharing the greatest gift of all, the gift of life.
What We Do
To provide transplant patients and their caregivers with high-qualtiy affordable accommodations in a supportive, home-like environment. In 1973, Helen Pompeian gave life to her son, Ed for a second time. Little did he know how his mother's gift of a kidney would change his life. Ed's direct experience with the needs of transplant families quickly led him to believe that home-like lodging would be beneficial to the health and well being of all concerned. This began the dream now known as the Gift of Life. It took several years for Ed and a group of volunteers to raise the funds needed to buy a suitable house. In December 1984, Gift of Life opened its first house with space for 8 patients and their caregivers. In 1994, our current home was purchased. After two major expansions (in 1995 and 2000), today our house serves hundreds of families per year in 48 guest rooms. We offer three kitchens, four dining rooms, five day rooms, a library, an exercise room, on-site laundry, two fireplaces, two large screen televisions, and many other amenities that make a house a home for extended stays our guests typically have. Though we offer all this, plus our love and compassion to every family every day, we have never turned away a guest for lack of ability to pay the nominal fee we charge per night. Gift of Life Transplant House is supported by donations, memorials, and some grant funds. These contributions make the dream of this House a reality every day.
