Running Start for School is a United Way of Olmsted County program that helps provide school supplies for children and families who have barriers to accessing them. This summer, UWOC is partnering with Rochester Public Schools during the "locker clean out" time to gather unused or lightly used supplies that students left in their lockers after schools were closed due to the coronavirus causing COVID-19.
Volunteers will monitor and encourage students and families to donate those supplies to the collection bins on site. You will be outside of the schools and are encouraged to stand at least 6 ft apart from other volunteers and people on site. You are not required to touch the supplies, as they have been handled by multiple people before coming to the collection bins. If you do touch the supplies without wearing a pair of gloves you bring, you understand and are accepting the risks associated with that action. You are welcome to bring a lawn chair if you'd like to sit during your shift.
A UWOC staff person will meet you at the beginning of your shift. This volunteer opportunity is at Willow Creek middle school from 11 AM - 2 PM. You must wear a mask and stand at least 6 feet apart from other people during your volunteer shift. You must fill out the volunteer safety waiver on this need before your shift. Send to impact@uwolmsted.org once the waiver is completed.
United Way of Olmsted County encourages everyone to follow the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), MN Department of Health, and local authorities.
